Kiri yoga ashtanga yoga primary series

Kiri Sutherland

I started ashtanga yoga over 20 years ago and immediately loved the challenge and transformation experienced within this practice.

I teach a gentle approach with  respect for the student and the method.  I have learnt the first 3 ashtanga series which has given me an in-depth understanding of the ashtanga process to help all levels. My teaching is based on compassion and attention to individual needs.

My love for the practice and India led me to study at KPJAYI in Mysore, India  seven times since 2001 and I was level 2 authorised in 2011.

I teach small traditional classes for all levels in beautiful Tairawhiti and hold workshops and retreats in awesome places  around NZ such as Raglan, Queenstown, Matakana, Taupo and Hawkes Bay to connect with the wider ashtanga community.

Online classes are also available via zoom

Testimonials

I love practicing with Kiri. Her down to earth manner and sense of humour make even the most difficult of poses seem achievable. I have practiced with her both in person and via zoom classes for six years now, and she has supported me through recovery from a serious back injury, and helped me progress through primary series. Even when I took a long break from yoga Kiri welcomed me back with kindness, support and encouragement. Kiri is an extremely experienced teacher and student herself and as such gives thoughtful and supportive physical adjustments and creates a safe and relaxed class environment. I have observed every student, whether attending their first class or their thousandth, receive the same attention, thoughtful advice and kind welcome from Kiri. Highly recommended!

I have practised with Kiri for around 11 years, Kiri leads insightful and caring classes - in person I find her knowledge to be inspiring and her adjustments are precise and thoughtful.
I’ve followed her Zoom led classes for the last couple of months and find them to be traditional and thorough in presentation with a wonderful offering of options to suit various levels. Kiri seems to intuit the missing link in ones practice and offers humble yet ground breaking solutions.

Kiri- thanks so much for making yoga so accessible and easy on zoom. I so appreciate the short form morning classes in particular. That oh my goodness getting out of bed soon pays off as I finish feeling stretched and energised and breathed into my day.
Working through lockdown with you, mostly the shorter form sessions, I can feel so much opening and flexibility coming in my back, hips and shoulders. My whole ashtanga practice is really benefitting from your attention and direction.

I have been practicing yoga with Kiri either on retreats or workshops for 8 years, her knowledge and passion for her own practice is transferred to us, the student, through calm and gentle guidance, her instruction is based on her years of experience and I feel confident knowing she is guiding my individual practice based on my needs. How amazing to be able to practice DAILY with Kiri on ZOOM. Not only to practice yoga but also to engage with Kiri and others during a yoga practice, awesome.

Thanks for the lovely zoom class Kiri. I wasn’t sure how Mysore would translate in the virtual world, but it was actually really nice having you there watching and offering helpful insights...not so different from ‘real’ life! Thx for the opportunity.

Kiri’s classes are amazing. She works with your body carefully and still manages to get you to extend yourself further than you thought possible. She is patient and funny, too. I really enjoy her classes in the morning as a great way to start a day.

Kiri even though I’m your neighbour I still like the idea of being able to incorporate some Zoom yoga into my programme. For me it has encouraged a level of practise I would never have achieved as “self” practise, it’s been delightful getting to met and be part of this zoom Shala, it’s widened our practises, our perspectives, and created lovely connections. I think we are all feel very grateful for your commitment to us.
